Blown-in insulation bag calculator
Estimate blown-in insulation bags from measured area and the selected product's coverage chart for your chosen target R-value.
Estimate bags of loose-fill insulation from the area you measured and the coverage row for the exact product and target R-value you selected. This tool does not supply default coverage, infer a regional requirement, or choose an R-value.
Enter a product, target R-value, area and at least one chart coverage measure.
Copy coverage from the selected product's chart row for the intended application and target R-value. When both measures are listed, the tool calculates both and uses the larger whole-bag count. The chart's minimum thickness and all installation directions still apply. Actual coverage can vary with blowing equipment, machine setup and technique; check the current bag label and manufacturer instructions.
Sources and method
- Owens Corning PROPINK Loosefill Coverage Guidelines and Troubleshooting (publication 10023876-A, November 2023): explains that coverage is tied to specified thickness/R-value and varies with machine configuration and installation conditions.
- Owens Corning PROPINK L77 Loosefill Insulation product data sheet (publication 44426-H, May 2011): example of an application-specific chart with R-value, minimum thickness, maximum square feet per bag and bags per 1,000 square feet. Verify current values on the selected product's own packaging or documentation.
For each entered chart measure, bags required = measured area ÷ maximum square feet per bag, or measured area ÷ 1,000 × minimum bags per 1,000 square feet. Each result rounds up to a whole bag; if both are entered, the higher count is shown. No extra allowance is added because the chart values describe minimum coverage requirements.
How it works
Enter your measured area, target R-value, and one or both coverage figures from the exact selected loose-fill product chart: maximum square feet per bag and/or minimum bags per 1,000 square feet. The calculator uses the larger whole-bag result when both chart measures are entered.
Good to know
Quick answer: how many blown-in insulation bags do I need?
Use the coverage row for the exact product and target R-value. Divide your measured area by the chart's maximum square feet per bag, or multiply area ÷ 1,000 by its minimum bags per 1,000 square feet; round up to whole bags. If both chart measures are available, this tool calculates both and uses the larger whole-bag count. Reviewed November 3, 2026.
Why does this ask for the selected product's chart values?
Loose-fill coverage depends on the product, target R-value, blowing equipment and setup. Owens Corning's PROPINK coverage guide explains that maximum square feet per bag applies at a specified installed thickness and that exceeding it can result in less than the stated R-value. This calculator does not assume a product or coverage.
Should I enter both coverage measures?
If the exact chart lists both maximum square feet per bag and minimum bags per 1,000 square feet, enter both as a cross-check. The calculator rounds each requirement up and reports the larger count. If the chart lists only one, enter that measure and leave the other blank.
Does this choose an R-value or verify installation?
No. The target R-value and coverage are your inputs. Check that the product chart row is for the intended application and follow its minimum thickness, bag count and installation instructions. This is a material estimate, not an R-value recommendation or installation plan.
