Weatherstripping length estimator
Add measured door and window edges to estimate weatherstripping length. Use product-specific fit and installation instructions.
Estimate measured edge length
Enter each weatherstripped edge separately. For example, count two door sides as one line with quantity 2, then enter the top edge on another line. For windows, measure the edges that the selected product is designed to seal.
Enter measured edges and calculate.
This adds only the lengths you entered. Confirm which edges and weatherstripping type fit each door or window, then follow the selected product's sizing and installation instructions. The estimate is a measured minimum; add any overlap or cutting allowance only when supported by your layout and product instructions. A door sweep or threshold may be a separate product.
Sources and method
- U.S. Department of Energy: Job Aid 11-1, Install Weatherstripping on an Exterior Door (accessed November 3, 2026): directs users to measure each side of the doorway and the door top or bottom for weatherstripping or a potential sweep. This supports the measurement checklist; it does not provide a universal product yield or allowance.
- U.S. Department of Energy: Weatherization Single-Family Home Job Aids (May 2022): instructs fitting and fastening weatherstripping while checking that the door operates smoothly.
Method: for each entered edge, multiply its measured length by the number of matching edges, then add the rows. Inches are converted to linear feet by dividing by 12. No overlap, product package length, waste factor or savings estimate is assumed.
How it works
Measure the edges where the selected weatherstripping product will go. Enter one labeled edge per line as length × quantity, select inches or feet, then add the results. Use current product instructions to determine suitable edges, fit and any overlap.
Good to know
Quick answer: how do I estimate weatherstripping length?
Measure each edge where the selected product will be installed. Enter each measured length and the count of matching edges, then add the rows. For an exterior door, the Department of Energy job aid says to measure each side of the doorway and the top or bottom as appropriate for weatherstripping or a sweep. Product fit and installation instructions determine what to include. Reviewed November 3, 2026.
Should I measure every side of a window or door?
Measure the edges where the selected weatherstripping product is designed to fit. DOE’s exterior-door job aid describes measuring each side of the doorway and measuring the top or bottom as appropriate. Window designs and product types vary, so follow the product’s sizing directions.
Does this estimate include a waste allowance or package count?
No. It totals only the measured lengths entered. It does not assume overlap, cutting waste, product packaging, or an installation allowance. Add extra length only when your product instructions and measured layout support it.
Does this include a door sweep?
No. The measurement list can include an edge you intend to seal, but a sweep or threshold may be a separate product with its own fit requirements. Check the selected product and door operation before purchasing or installing.
