Closet shelf cut list tally

Tally labeled closet organizer cuts by entered dimensions and quantity, with a total piece count and cut volume. No stock layout or load rating is assumed.

Enter each cut as a label, length × width × thickness in inches, and a whole-piece quantity. Use the actual dimensions you intend to cut, including plywood parts or solid-wood pieces if you want them in the same volume tally.

Enter one or more labeled cuts and calculate.

The tally multiplies the three entered dimensions by quantity and sums the resulting volume. It does not nest parts onto sheets or stock, account for kerf, grain direction, defects or reusable offcuts, estimate purchase quantity or price, or determine shelf load capacity or structural suitability. Verify dimensions, material and support details for your project.

Sources and method

For each row, cubic inches = length × width × thickness × quantity. Total cubic feet = summed cubic inches ÷ 1,728. The cubic-foot figure is only a volume tally from the dimensions entered; it is not a sheet-layout or lumber-order estimate.

How it works

List each labeled part as length × width × thickness × quantity in inches, using actual dimensions you intend to cut. The tally multiplies each set of dimensions by its quantity, counts pieces and sums cubic inches into cubic feet. It does not nest cuts onto sheets or stock, account for kerf or offcut reuse, estimate a purchase quantity or assess load capacity.

Good to know

Quick answer: how do I tally a closet shelf cut list?

Write each part as a label, length × width × thickness and quantity, using the actual dimensions you plan to cut. Multiply the three dimensions by quantity for each row, then sum the results. This tool reports piece count and entered cut volume; it does not determine how many sheets or boards to buy. The Home Depot closet organizer guide gives a project-specific example cut list and notes that measurements need to be adjusted for a differently sized closet. Reviewed November 3, 2026.

What format should each row use?

Enter one row per part type, such as “Side panels: 72 x 19 x 0.5 x 2”. The first three values are length, width and thickness in inches; the last is a whole-piece quantity. Use labels to keep similar dimensions assigned to their intended parts.

Does this tell me how much plywood or lumber to buy?

No. It totals the volume of the dimensions entered. It does not arrange parts on sheets or stock lengths, account for saw kerf, grain direction, defects or reusable offcuts, or estimate a purchase quantity. Make a project-specific layout and confirm material requirements before buying.

Does the tally check shelf strength or safe loading?

No. The arithmetic makes no claim about material grade, span, supports, fasteners, wall attachment or load capacity. Follow the selected material and hardware instructions and use a qualified professional where the project requires structural advice.
