Tile quantity and box calculator

Estimate whole tiles from entered face dimensions and whole boxes from selected product coverage, with your own allowance.

Measure the surface you plan to tile, then enter the coverage printed for the exact tile box and the face dimensions of one tile. Choose an allowance for your own layout; the estimate rounds up to whole boxes and whole tiles.

Enter values and calculate.

For irregular spaces, split the surface into rectangles, calculate each area and add them. Subtract openings or fitted units that will not be tiled. Your allowance is an input, not a recommendation; cuts, layout and breakage affect the order. The tile count divides adjusted area by the face area of one rectangular tile; it ignores grout joints and does not optimize cuts. Confirm actual tile dimensions, box coverage and ordering units on the selected product.

Sources and method

Method: adjusted area = measured area × (1 + your allowance ÷ 100). Whole boxes = round adjusted area up by the selected box coverage. Tile face area in square metres = (width in mm ÷ 1,000) × (length in mm ÷ 1,000); whole tiles = round adjusted area up by tile face area. The calculator retains unrounded intermediate values and rounds only the resulting whole counts. This area calculation does not optimize tile layout or determine whether a product is suitable for a particular wall or floor.

How it works

Measure the surfaces to be tiled and subtract areas that will remain uncovered. Enter selected tile box coverage, the rectangular tile face dimensions in millimetres, and any allowance you choose; the estimator rounds both counts up.

Good to know

Quick answer: how many tile boxes should I buy?

Add the measured areas you plan to tile and subtract openings or fitted units that will remain uncovered. Multiply by one plus your chosen allowance divided by 100; divide by selected box coverage for boxes, and by one tile face area for a theoretical piece count. Round both up. Box coverage and tile dimensions vary by product. Reviewed November 3, 2026.

How do I measure an irregular room or wall?

Break the surface into smaller rectangles, calculate each length times width, then add the rectangle areas. Subtract windows, doors or fitted units that will not be tiled. Toolstation describes this approach in its tile installation guide.

What allowance should I use?

Enter an allowance that fits your layout and plans. Tile size, cuts, pattern, room shape and breakage affect the amount. The guide recommends allowing for cuts and breakage, but this calculator does not set a universal percentage.

Does this plan the tile layout or suitability?

No. It estimates a theoretical piece count from area and tile face area, plus boxes from entered package coverage. It does not arrange tiles, optimize cuts or determine product suitability. Check the selected product instructions for installation, batch and ordering details; layout can change the amount required.

How does the whole-tile count work?

It divides the area after your allowance by the rectangular tile face area calculated from your entered width and length in millimetres, then rounds up. It ignores grout joints and does not arrange tiles or optimize cuts. Use the actual dimensions and product instructions for your selected tile.
