House-wrap roll coverage planner

Estimate house-wrap rolls from measured wall faces, optional opening deductions, selected roll dimensions and an overlap allowance you enter.

Estimate whole house-wrap rolls from measured wall faces, any opening area you choose to deduct, and the roll dimensions shown on the selected product. This calculator applies only the overlap allowance you enter; it does not infer product yield or installation layout. The calculation runs in your browser.

Enter measured wall faces, the selected roll dimensions and an allowance you choose.

Deduct only openings you choose to exclude. Wrap may be cut and integrated around openings during installation, so this area subtraction does not model material used for rough-opening details. The entered allowance is your assumption; no universal roll yield, lap, course count or installation plan is inferred.

How the estimate works

  1. List each measured rectangular wall face as Label: width x height in feet. Add its width × height to get gross wall area.
  2. Optionally list measured rectangular openings to deduct. The result cannot be zero or negative.
  3. Enter the width and length printed for the exact roll, plus an overlap allowance based on your product and layout.
  4. Multiply net wall area by 1 + allowance ÷ 100, divide by roll width × roll length, and round up to a whole roll.

This is an area-based planning estimate. It does not calculate horizontal courses, seam layout, gables, corners, penetrations, cut reuse or details around openings. Follow current installation instructions for the selected product and confirm the takeoff with your supplier.

Also estimating siding area? Use the vinyl siding area calculator for rectangular walls, triangular gables and openings that will not receive siding.

Sources and method

Formula: whole rolls = ceil(((gross measured wall area − opening area entered for deduction) × (1 + user allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ (selected roll width × selected roll length)). The allowance, roll dimensions and opening deduction are user inputs.

How it works

Add measured wall-face areas, enter any opening area you choose to deduct, and use the width and length shown on the selected roll. The estimate applies your overlap allowance and rounds up to whole rolls.

Good to know

Quick answer: how many rolls of house wrap do I need?

Add the measured wall-face areas, subtract any opening area you choose to deduct, increase the result by your entered overlap allowance, then divide by the selected roll's nominal area and round up to whole rolls. This is a planning estimate, not an installation layout. Reviewed November 3, 2026.

What roll size should I enter?

Use the width and length shown on the exact product roll or package. DuPont lists several Tyvek HomeWrap sizes, which are product-specific examples; other house-wrap products can differ.

Should I subtract windows and doors?

Enter only the opening area you choose to deduct. House wrap may be cut and integrated around openings as part of installation, so an area subtraction does not account for material used at rough openings. Follow the selected product's current installation instructions.

What overlap allowance should I use?

Enter an allowance based on the product, wall layout, openings and installation method. This calculator does not choose a universal percentage or calculate seam courses; verify laps and details in the instructions for the selected product.
