Countertop area calculator for multiple sections
Add measured rectangular countertop sections in inches and see each area and the total in square feet. The estimate excludes cutouts and fabrication details.
Sketch the layout and enter each rectangular section separately. Use inches for length and depth. Add islands, peninsulas, bar tops or backsplashes as their own rows only when you want them included in the area total.
Enter one or more rectangular sections and calculate.
This is a preliminary area worksheet. It counts each full rectangle and does not subtract sink, cooktop or other cutouts, resolve overlaps, or account for seams, overhangs, edges, fabrication, price or supplier minimums. Verify the final template and material requirements with your supplier or installer.
Sources and method
- The Home Depot: Countertop Project Estimation Worksheet (reviewed November 3, 2026): recommends sketching the layout, dividing it into simple rectangles or squares, measuring section length and depth in inches, summing square inches and dividing by 144 to get square feet. It describes the worksheet as preliminary and says final measurements and options can change material needs and cost.
For each section, area = length (in) × depth (in). Total square feet = sum of section square inches ÷ 144 square inches per square foot. The tool reports the full rectangular areas entered; it does not make a fabrication takeoff.
How it works
Sketch the countertop project as separate rectangular sections, then enter each section's measured length and depth in inches. The worksheet shows each length × depth area, sums square inches and divides by 144 to report square feet. Include islands, peninsulas or backsplashes as separate rows only if you want them counted. It does not subtract sink or cooktop cutouts, model seams, or estimate fabrication, installation or price.
Good to know
Quick answer: how do I calculate countertop square footage?
For each rectangular section, multiply its length in inches by its depth in inches. Add the section areas in square inches, then divide by 144 to convert to square feet. The Home Depot's countertop worksheet uses this method and recommends breaking a sketch into simple rectangles or squares. This estimate does not account for cutouts, seams, edge profiles or fabrication. Reviewed November 3, 2026.
What should I count as a separate section?
Measure separate rectangular runs and separately include an island, bar top, peninsula or backsplash when it is part of the area you want counted. The Home Depot worksheet suggests labeling those parts separately in a project sketch. Avoid double-counting overlapping or shared areas.
Does the total subtract a sink or cooktop cutout?
No. This worksheet sums full rectangular section areas. It does not subtract sink, cooktop, faucet or outlet openings, or model material layout, seams, overhangs, edge details, minimum order rules or fabrication. Confirm measurements and requirements with the selected supplier or installer.
Can I use this for an installed price estimate?
No. It only reports area from your inputs and has no price field. The Home Depot worksheet says its preliminary estimate is not a contract and that final measurements and project options affect the actual cost and material requirements.
