Crown molding stock length estimator

Estimate crown molding footage and a footage-only stock-length minimum from measured wall runs and an allowance you choose.

Enter each measured wall run where crown molding will be installed, the stock length you plan to buy and an allowance you choose. The estimate reports adjusted linear footage and the footage-only minimum number of stock lengths.

Enter values and calculate.

Measure the actual runs and note openings and corner angles. The allowance is your assumption, not a recommendation. The stock count divides total adjusted footage by stock length and rounds up; it is a footage-only lower bound, not a cut list or optimized purchase count. Corners, coping, joints, stock availability, cut sequencing and reusable offcuts affect what you need.

Sources and method

Method: sum entered wall-run lengths, multiply by 1 + your allowance percentage ÷ 100, then divide by selected stock length and round up. The stock-length count is only a total-footage floor: it does not allocate individual cuts to boards, account for corner geometry or determine whether offcuts can be reused.

How it works

Enter measured wall runs in feet, the selected stock length and an allowance you choose. The tool sums the runs, applies the allowance, and rounds the total footage up to stock-length equivalents. This is a lower-bound estimate, not a cut plan; corner geometry, joints, cuts and offcut reuse affect the actual purchase count.

Good to know

Quick answer: how many lengths of crown molding do I need?

Add the measured wall runs, multiply by 1 plus your chosen allowance divided by 100, then divide by the selected stock length and round up. This gives only a footage-based minimum, because cuts, corner joints and offcut reuse change how stock can be assigned. Reviewed November 3, 2026.

What should I measure before estimating?

Measure each wall run where molding will be installed and note openings and corner angles. The Home Depot crown-molding guide describes measuring walls and fitting joints, including coped corners. This calculator does not determine cut lengths or angles.

What cutting allowance should I use?

Choose an allowance based on your room layout, material and cutting plan. This page does not recommend a percentage or apply a universal product yield.

Does the stock count make a cut list?

No. It divides adjusted total footage by the selected stock length and rounds up. It does not assign pieces to boards, optimize cuts or predict offcut reuse, so use a project-specific layout to determine what to buy.
