Deck joist layout count and footage estimator

Estimate deck joist count and total linear footage from measured layout width, joist length, selected spacing and end offsets.

Count joists across a measured layout run using spacing and edge-to-center offsets from your own plan. This is a quantity worksheet; it does not select structural spacing or size members.

Enter the measured layout and plan values to calculate.

Confirm dimensions and spacing against the project plan. The result does not include rim joists, doubled members, blocking, cantilevers, stock-length cut optimization, connections or structural/code checks.

Sources and method

Clear run between the first and last entered joist centers = measured layout run × 12 − first offset − last offset. Intervals = ceiling(clear run ÷ entered maximum spacing); joists = intervals + 1. The calculator evenly spaces the resulting intervals between the selected center offsets. Total linear footage = joist count × entered joist length. The optional allowance applies only to total footage.

How it works

Measure the dimension across which joists repeat, the individual joist length, and the intended first and last joist center offsets. Enter the maximum spacing from your project plan. The tool calculates a uniform layout that fits within that spacing and totals the joist footage. It does not recommend spacing, sizing or structural details.

Good to know

Quick answer: how do I estimate deck joist count?

Subtract the first and last center offsets from the measured distribution width. Divide the clear center-to-center run by your selected maximum spacing, round the number of intervals up, then add one joist. The tool evenly distributes those intervals between the entered offsets and multiplies count by joist length for total linear footage. Reviewed November 3, 2026.

Does this tool tell me what spacing to use?

No. Enter spacing from the project plan or qualified design source. Joist spacing and span relate to lumber and deck design; the American Wood Council guide includes design tables and framing-plan context. This quantity tool does not check those requirements.

Why can the displayed spacing be smaller than my entered spacing?

The calculator treats your entered value as the maximum spacing, rounds the interval count up to fit the clear run, then evenly distributes the joists between the center offsets. The resulting spacing can therefore be slightly tighter.

Is total footage the number of boards to buy?

No. Total linear footage is a quantity tally. It does not optimize stock lengths or account for rim joists, doubled members, blocking, cantilevers, cut reuse, connections or other framing details.

Does this verify that my deck is safe or code-compliant?

No. It does not size joists or verify spans, lumber species or grade, loads, beams, supports, connections, decking compatibility or local code. Use project documents and confirm structural details with a qualified professional and local authority.
