Gravel volume and supplier-weight calculator
Estimate gravel volume from measured area and depth, then convert to weight with bulk density supplied for your selected material.
Measure the footprint to cover, enter the planned loose depth, and use bulk density supplied for the exact gravel product and delivery condition. The tool reports geometric volume and an estimated material mass; it does not choose a density or apply compaction.
Enter values and calculate.
Use bulk or loose unit weight for the exact aggregate, product grade and condition you plan to order. Do not enter particle specific gravity as bulk density. Ask the supplier whether its figure is for loose delivered material or compacted material; delivery mass can also vary with moisture.
Sources and method
- Central Texas Materials: Decomposed Granite product information (reviewed November 3, 2026): this supplier lists an estimated bulk density for its specific decomposed granite and advises customers to confirm source-specific density. That figure is an example only and is not a default in this tool.
- Alabama Department of Transportation: Sources of Coarse and Fine Aggregates, List I-1 (revised November 6, 2025): lists loose unit mass by named gravel source, illustrating that a useful density is source- and material-specific.
Method: cubic feet = area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 12. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. For a supplier density in lb/ft³, estimated pounds = cubic feet × density, then US short tons = pounds ÷ 2,000. For a density in US short tons/yd³, estimated short tons = cubic yards × density, then pounds = short tons × 2,000. These are unit conversions using your input; they do not predict compaction, settlement, moisture or a supplier's order minimum. Confirm order quantity with the supplier.
How it works
Measure the area and planned loose depth. Enter the bulk density and unit provided by your gravel supplier for the exact product and delivery condition. The calculator converts area and depth to cubic feet and cubic yards, then estimates pounds and US short tons from that supplier input.
Good to know
Quick answer: how much gravel volume and weight do I need?
Volume in cubic feet = area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 12. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards. For weight, multiply cubic feet by the supplier's bulk density in pounds per cubic foot, or multiply cubic yards by density in US short tons per cubic yard. Reviewed November 3, 2026. Use a density for the exact product and loose or compacted condition; there is no universal tons-per-yard input here.
Where do I get the density?
Ask the supplier for bulk density or loose unit weight for the exact gravel grade and condition being delivered. Supplier and government aggregate listings show values tied to particular products or sources. Do not substitute particle specific gravity, which is a different measure.
Does the estimate account for compaction or moisture?
No. It calculates geometric volume and multiplies it by your density input. Compaction, settlement, moisture, grading and truck loading can change actual volume or delivered weight. Ask the supplier what condition its density describes and how to order for your project.
Are US tons the same as metric tonnes?
No. This calculator reports US short tons, equal to 2,000 pounds. If your supplier quotes metric tonnes or another unit, convert using that unit explicitly before comparing estimates.
