Paver patio material estimator
Estimate paver packages, base volume and leveling-sand volume from measured patio area, package coverage, project-specific depths and your chosen allowance.
Enter the finished patio area, coverage on the paver package you selected, and the base and leveling-sand depths from your project plan or product instructions. This browser estimate reports paver packages and material volume; it does not select an installation design.
Enter values and calculate.
Use coverage for the exact paver package and depths from guidance for your site, drainage, paver thickness and installation system. The allowance is your input. Compaction, excavation dimensions, irregular shapes and ordering units can affect the amount delivered.
Sources and method
- Lowe’s: Paver Project Material Calculators and DIY Paver Patio and Walkway Installation (reviewed November 3, 2026): the worksheet asks users to enter the selected paver’s coverage, project area, and installation-specific base depth; it also calculates leveling sand and base volumes. Its installation instructions describe a particular excavation and leveling approach, so this tool does not treat those depths as universal requirements.
Method: adjusted area = measured finished area × (1 + your allowance ÷ 100). Whole paver packages = round adjusted area up by the selected package coverage. Each material volume in cubic feet = adjusted area × your entered depth in inches ÷ 12; cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Base and sand volumes are estimates before supplier-specific compaction, packaging or delivery adjustments. The allowance applies to all three estimates.
How it works
Measure the finished paver area. Enter coverage for the selected paver package and base and leveling-sand depths from project-specific installation guidance. Add an allowance you choose; the estimate rounds paver packages up and calculates material volumes.
Good to know
Quick answer: how much paver, base and sand material should I estimate?
Measure the finished project area. Divide the area, adjusted by any allowance you choose, by the selected paver package's listed coverage and round up to whole packages. For base and leveling sand, multiply that adjusted area by the depth specified for your project and divide by 12 to get cubic feet; divide by 27 for cubic yards. Reviewed November 3, 2026. Depth and compaction needs depend on the project and installation guidance.
What paver coverage should I use?
Use the coverage printed for the exact paver package you plan to buy. Package coverage varies by product and paver size; this calculator does not assume a standard pieces-per-square-foot value.
What base depth should I enter?
Use the depth from instructions appropriate to your site and selected system. The cited Lowe's worksheet describes one installation approach and asks the user to calculate base depth for the project; soil drainage, paver height, leveling layer and compaction affect that plan. This calculator does not prescribe a universal depth.
Does the volume account for compaction or delivery packaging?
The result is a geometric volume from the entered area and depths. It does not apply a compaction factor or convert to bags, tons or supplier units. Ask the selected material supplier how its product is sold and what order quantity suits the project.
Does this create a complete patio plan?
No. It does not determine excavation dimensions, drainage slope, edge restraint, joint sand, cuts, pattern layout or site suitability. Follow the selected product instructions and project-specific guidance; call 811 to have utilities marked before excavation, as Lowe's advises.
