Roof shingle bundle estimator
Estimate shingle bundles from measured roof-face area, the selected package coverage and an allowance you choose. Roof footprint is not roof area.
Estimate field shingle bundles from measured roof-face area and the coverage printed for your selected product. The estimate runs in your browser and does not calculate roof dimensions from a home's footprint.
Enter values and calculate.
Need to convert horizontal plan measurements to estimated sloped area first? Use the roof pitch area calculator for identical rectangular planes, then enter their combined roof-face area here.
Estimating ridge-cap material separately? Use the GAF Seal-A-Ridge bundle estimator with measured hip/ridge length and the selected package coverage.
Measure every roof plane that will receive shingles, including dormers and other roof sections. Use the coverage stated for the exact product you selected; bundles per roofing square vary. This is a field-shingle estimate, not a complete roofing material takeoff or installation plan.
Sources and method
- GAF: How Many Bundles of Shingles Are in a Square? (published August 24, 2026; accessed November 3, 2026): measure and sum actual roof planes; roof area differs from home footprint; shingle package coverage and bundle counts vary by product.
Formula: estimated whole bundles = ceil((measured roof-face area × (1 + your allowance ÷ 100)) ÷ selected package coverage). The optional allowance is your own input, not a recommendation. Confirm measurements, product coverage, accessories and installation requirements with the selected product instructions or a qualified roofing professional.
How it works
Measure the actual area of each roof face and add them together. Enter the selected shingle package coverage and your own allowance; the estimate rounds up to whole bundles.
Good to know
Quick answer: how many shingle bundles do I need?
Add the measured areas of the roof faces you will cover. Multiply that total by 1 plus your chosen allowance divided by 100, then divide by the coverage per bundle printed for your selected shingles and round up. Package coverage varies by product. Reviewed November 3, 2026.
Can I use my home footprint as the roof area?
No. GAF notes roof size differs from home footprint because of pitch, eaves and other features. Measure the actual roof planes, including dormers or other surfaces that will receive shingles.
How do I find bundle coverage?
Check the selected shingle package or current product specifications. GAF explains that bundle count per roofing square can vary, so use the product’s stated coverage instead of assuming a fixed bundles-per-square value.
What allowance should I enter?
Enter an allowance you choose for your project. Roof features, cuts, valleys, dormers and installation details can change material needs; this calculator does not prescribe a universal waste percentage or include accessory materials.
Does this estimate a complete roof order?
No. It estimates field shingle bundles from area and package coverage only. Ridge caps, starter strips, underlayment, flashing, fasteners and other components require separate takeoffs and the selected system instructions.
