Vinyl siding area and package calculator

Estimate vinyl siding packages from measured wall faces, gables and uncovered openings using the coverage and allowance you enter.

Estimate siding packages from measured wall faces

Enter each rectangular wall as Label: width x height in feet. Enter triangular gables as Label: base x height; the calculator uses half the base times height. List doors, windows and other areas that will not receive siding separately.

Enter measured faces, selected product coverage and an allowance you choose.

Measure each shape once and do not subtract openings already excluded from the wall faces. This is an area estimate only; it excludes soffits, trim, accessories and installation details. An allowance is your assumption, not a recommendation. Check package coverage and ordering units for the exact siding product.

For house-wrap roll estimates, see the house-wrap coverage planner.

Sources and method

Method: add rectangular areas and triangular gable areas (base × height ÷ 2); subtract entered opening areas; multiply the net area by 1 + your allowance ÷ 100; divide by the selected package's entered square-foot coverage and round up. Gables, cut-up surfaces, corners and installation conditions affect actual material use, so confirm the takeoff and package units with the selected product instructions or supplier.

How it works

Measure rectangular wall faces and triangular gables separately, then enter openings that will not receive siding. Enter the coverage for the selected product package and an allowance you choose; the estimator calculates net and adjusted area and rounds packages up.

Good to know

Quick answer: how many siding packages should I estimate?

Add rectangular wall areas (width × height) and triangular gables (base × height ÷ 2), subtract openings that will not receive siding, multiply by 1 plus your chosen allowance divided by 100, then divide by the selected package coverage and round up. Lowe’s describes vinyl siding squares as 100 square feet, but this estimator uses the coverage you enter for your exact product and purchase unit. Reviewed November 3, 2026.

How do I measure gables and openings?

Measure each rectangular face as width × height. For a triangular gable, multiply its base by its center height and divide by two. Measure doors and windows that will not receive siding and subtract their areas. Lowe’s recommends sketching each side and recording these measurements.

What allowance should I use?

Enter an allowance based on your own layout and product instructions. Lowe’s calculator suggests an allowance for trimming and installation waste, but this tool does not set or prefill one because cut-up walls, corners, product profiles and installation conditions differ.

What package coverage should I enter?

Use the coverage and unit printed for the exact product you plan to buy. Lowe’s describes vinyl siding squares as 100 square feet, but products may be sold in different package configurations. Confirm whether the coverage represents one package, one square or another order unit before using the result.

Does this include soffits, trim or accessories?

No. It estimates siding area on entered wall faces only. Measure soffits, porch ceilings, trim and accessories separately and follow the selected product instructions; the estimate is not a complete installation takeoff.
