Wallpaper roll estimator with pattern repeat

Estimate wallpaper roll units from measured wall widths, pattern repeat and selected package dimensions; account for openings in net wall-face area.

Use dimensions and packaging information for the exact wallpaper design you plan to buy. Enter one wall width per comma-separated value. Measurements must use the same unit throughout; convert inches to feet or centimetres to metres before entering.

Enter values and calculate.

Opening sizes show gross and net wall-face area, but do not reduce the drop count: paper cut around a door or window may not be reusable, and openings can split drops. The roll estimate remains based on full-height drops for each wall, with drop length rounded up to a whole repeat. Enter the effective wallpaper width and length exactly as the selected product defines a roll unit; verify whether the label describes a single roll, a set, or another package. This tool does not add a spare roll automatically.

Sources and method

Method: for each entered wall, drops = ceiling(wall width ÷ effective roll width). Drop length = wall height when repeat is zero; otherwise ceiling(wall height ÷ repeat) × repeat. Usable drops per roll unit = floor(roll length ÷ drop length). Roll units = ceiling(total drops ÷ usable drops per roll unit); packages = ceiling(roll units ÷ roll units per package). Enter each non-overlapping opening once; opening rectangles report gross area minus opening area as net wall-face area; they do not change the drop-based roll estimate. This straight-match planning estimate does not model half-drop matching, corners, trimming, offcut reuse, or room-specific layout. Follow current product instructions and confirm the order with the supplier or decorator.

How it works

Enter each wall width as a comma-separated list, the common wall height, optional opening width × height pairs (one per line), and the selected wallpaper's roll-unit dimensions and pattern repeat. Enter how many roll units are included in each package. The result reports gross and net wall-face area and shows how the drop, roll-unit and package counts round up or down.

Good to know

Quick answer: how many wallpaper rolls should I estimate?

For each wall, divide its width by the selected wallpaper's effective roll width and round up to get drops. Round wall height up to a whole pattern repeat for a conservative straight-match drop length. Divide roll length by drop length and round down to find usable drops per roll, then divide total drops by usable drops and round up to whole rolls. Finally, divide by roll units per package and round up to whole packages. Reviewed November 3, 2026. This is a simplified estimate; match type, layout and cut reuse affect actual use.

How do I enter a pattern repeat?

Use the repeat stated for the exact wallpaper design and enter it in the same units as the wall and roll dimensions. Enter zero for a plain design with no repeat. This method rounds each drop to a full repeat for a conservative straight-match estimate; half-drop and other match types may require more material, so follow the manufacturer's calculator or hanging guidance.

What if the product is sold as a double-roll set or another package?

Check how the selected product defines its roll dimensions and purchasable unit. Cole & Son's calculator says that for its 2-roll sets, users should double the roll width entered. For this estimator, enter the effective width and continuous length represented by one roll unit in the product's own convention, then enter how many such units come in one package. Do not mix set dimensions with single-roll dimensions.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

Optional opening dimensions reduce the reported net wall-face area, but do not lower the drop-based roll estimate. A drop may still be needed across an opening, and offcut reuse depends on the exact layout and pattern. The estimator does not optimize corners or cuts; confirm an order with the wallpaper supplier or decorator, especially for large patterns or complex rooms.
