Window screen mesh and spline estimator
Estimate screen mesh cut area, an area-only roll-length lower bound and spline footage from measured frame sizes and product-specific inputs.
Estimate screen mesh and spline from measured frames
Enter each screen frame as Label: width x height [x quantity], in inches. Use the measurement points for the exact screen style; frame outside edges, lips and hardware can change what dimensions are appropriate.
Enter frame measurements, selected roll width and your cut margin.
Mesh cut area includes your margin on every edge. The roll-length result is an area-only lower bound; it assumes perfect nesting and excludes edge trim, layout constraints and offcuts, so actual purchasing length may be greater. Spline footage follows the frame perimeter and your optional allowance. The estimator does not select spline diameter, mesh type, frame fit or an installation method. Follow the screen and material maker's measurement instructions.
Sources and method
- Milgard: How to Measure Window and Patio Door Screens (reviewed November 3, 2026): explains that measurement points differ by screen and operating style; some are measured outside edge to outside edge and others at an inside lip. Use the exact instructions for the frame being repaired.
- Phifer: How to Choose the Right Screen Spline Size (reviewed November 3, 2026): says spline diameter depends on the frame groove and screening type, and advises measuring the groove. This tool estimates footage only and does not choose a size.
For each frame, cut width = measured frame width + 2 × your margin; cut height = measured frame height + 2 × your margin. Mesh cut area sums cut width × cut height × quantity and converts square inches to square feet. The area-only roll-length lower bound divides total cut area by roll width. Spline length sums 2 × (frame width + frame height) × quantity, then applies your optional allowance. These estimates do not optimize a cut layout or model corners, retainers, clips or frame-specific details.
How it works
Measure each replacement screen using the instructions for its exact frame style. Enter frame width and height, selected mesh roll width, and a cut margin you choose. The estimator reports mesh cut area, an area-only lower bound for roll length, and frame-perimeter spline footage with an optional allowance.
Good to know
Quick answer: how much screen mesh and spline should I estimate?
Add your chosen margin to both sides of each measured frame dimension to estimate each mesh cut. Sum the cut areas and divide by the selected roll width for an area-only lower bound on roll length. For spline, add each frame perimeter and apply only an allowance you choose. This does not account for cut layout, offcuts or frame-specific retention details. Reviewed November 3, 2026.
Where should I measure a screen frame?
Follow the instructions for the exact window or door screen and operating style. Milgard explains that some screen types use outside-edge measurements while others use an inside lip. This calculator cannot determine the correct measurement points from a generic window opening.
How much extra mesh should I add?
Enter a cut margin that fits your frame and chosen screening instructions. This tool does not recommend a universal margin; mesh handling and frame/channel details differ.
What spline diameter should I buy?
This estimator does not select a spline diameter. Phifer says sizing depends on the groove and screening type; measure the frame groove and follow the selected screening product guidance.
Is the roll length a purchase recommendation?
No. It is the theoretical area divided by roll width. Real layouts need trimming and may leave unusable offcuts, so plan an actual cut layout and check product packaging before purchase.
